Project at a glance

Genetic basis of diabetes mellitus

Genetic mutations drive four primary diabetes types (type 1, type 2, gestational, and monogenic). The research team employs whole exome and genome sequencing in pediatric and adult populations to identify additional subtypes. Laboratory characterization occurs through in vitro studies using primary beta cells and islets, along with in vivo mouse models. Notable findings include identification that approximately 4% of children initially diagnosed with type 1 diabetes actually have monogenic forms. Preliminary results suggest genetic stratification within type 1 diabetes could forecast clinical outcomes. Precision diagnosis based on genetic information may enable treatment optimization to enhance metabolic management and patient quality of life.
