Studying how mammals extract and process socially relevant sensory information
The group investigates mammalian sensory perception and behavioral responses to social cues. Their primary focus centers on the vomeronasal circuit, a neural system crucial for recognizing pheromones and mediating social neuroendocrine effects and instinctive behaviors. The vomeronasal organ, located in the nasal cavity, contains neurons expressing specialized chemoreceptors. These receptors serve dual functions: direct involvement in chemical detection and establishing functional vomeronasal projections in the brain. Research employs mice as a model system, exploiting the unique genetic regulation where each neuron expresses only one receptor gene from a single parental allele.
